Which Northern Virginia High School Crew Team is best? The Winner is…

The unanswered question:

We have a really good idea which team is best in a particular event. Competitions answer that question for us. Individuals can probably be ranked as well. I suspect this would be done by comparing erg times.

But when we go to a competition, we usually hear people yelling for a school. Walking around regattas, I didn’t see a single T-shirt proclaiming someone’s erg time. I did see a lot that said “Robinson Crew” or “Westfields Crew” or “Oakton Crew”. Given those categories… which team is best?

Great Teams win with "Average"

There is no getting around the average. You are below average – in some things at least. In others you are probably above average. There is no ‘Lake Wobegon‘ where all the kids are above average. The statement is a fantasy – a dig at our self-delusions. This isn’t to say that kids aren’t great. Ice cream is great – but all ice cream isn’t “above average”

In the great majority of cases, a team will be made up of a Normal Distribution. A small number are better than average. The majority are average. A small number is worse than average.
